Matthew’s passion in Funeral Service began with the unexpected and sudden passing of his Aunt Joanna Holland Fields on June 7, 1987. It was then, at the tender age of 7 he recognized his calling in funeral service. In the spring of 1992, Matthew wrote a letter to Mr. James R. Barnes of James R. Barnes Mortuary explaining how he admired him as a mortician and how he wanted to be a Mortician just like him when he grew up. After receiving the letter, Mr. Barnes reached out to Matt’s mother, Ms. Kimberly Houston instructing her to, “tell Matt to come to see him for a job.” In short, Matt met with Mr. Barnes and began working for him that summer washing cars, cleaning the prep room, offices and working funerals. He also went on removals and helped with dressing the decedents.
