Rosalind Perkins Travis "Mama Rose"
Her birth:
Rosalind Perkins Travis "Mama Rose" was born on December 6, 1954, in Statesboro, Georgia to the late Rosa Mae Perkins Dickerson and Alfred "Baby" McCollum. She was the granddaughter of the late James and Rosa Bell Perkins.
Her education: Rose graduated from Statesboro High School in 1973. After she obtained her CNA license, she spent many years caring for people, nursing them back to health.
Her employment: Rose was a nurturer and loved to help people. With every job she had, she was always a big help to the sick, elderly and those with disabilities. Throughout her career, she cared for the sick while employed at the former Bulloch Memorial Hospital, Statesboro Nursing Home, Brown’s Nursing Home, Pineland Mental Health, and Willingway Hospital. She also operated a private business as an in-home caregiver. Her last job before she became ill was as a caretaker for the late Ms. Cynthia Anderson.
Her Faith: at an early age, Rose joined the Summer Hill Baptist Church. She had a strong belief in God and lived her life being a servant. She loved people and would always show that by being a helping hand when needed. She was very sweet, humble, gentle and kind. She was not loud or boastful and did not like attention, but her spirit always made her a magnet because she always exuded love!
Her hobbies: Rose loved to cook. She would feed any and everyone who entered her home. She always taught her children to “always feed someone no matter how much you have." She enjoyed music, dancing, and spending time with her family. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She would stay up all night to cook for her family. She always went the extra mile and always wanted everyone to be happy and have everything at peace.
Departure: Rose was a beacon of love to everyone she encountered. Her final moments were on June 10, 2024, as she was surrounded by her family. She accepted the call from heaven and made her transition. Preceding her in death is her daughter Yolanda Sabrina Polk Smith, her sisters, Gwynnette Dickerson, Glenda Dickerson, and Joyce Ann Reed; her brothers Thomas Dickerson and Walter Gene Dickerson, and a special sister Bessie May West.
Her family tree: Mama Rose leaves to cherish her loving memories her husband, Julius Travis of Savannah, GA; one son Antonio (Lyn) Polk of Monroe, GA; one daughter Franchonda Polk of Statesboro, GA; grandchildren she raised as her own, Rolonda Polk, Staciona Smith, Rochonda Smith, all of Statesboro, GA; a special niece Latiffany Brogenton, of Statesboro, GA; great-grands she raised Aubrey "Kitty" Smith and Myron "Man" Johnson, a brother James Dickerson, all of Statesboro, GA; sister and brother Gloria (Kenny) Harrelson of Forest Park, GA; and Reggie (Antwan) Perkins of Statesboro, GA; She is also survived by her aunt Dorothy McLeod of Charlotte, NC; and her special daughter Valoria (Lawrence) Armstrong of Chattanooga, TN; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.
A public viewing for Mrs. Rosalind Perkins Travis will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from Noon until 5:00 PM. The family will receive guests from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Matthew H. Lovett & Son's Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Travis will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the United Fellowship Worship Center, 19445 Hwy 301 North, Statesboro, GA 30461 with Pastor Brock Taylor, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Summer Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Lanier, Chad Allen, Eric Shatteen, Corey West, Dejuan Jackson, and Frank Bush
