Matthew H. Lovett & Son’s Funeral Home announces the passing of Mrs. Livian Washington Belcher, age 84, of Statesboro. Mrs. Belcher passed away Friday morning, July 5, 2024, at the NHC Healthcare in North Augusta, SC.
Livian Magnolia Washington-Belcher, also known as “Lil” or "Libby" was born on May 23, 1940, in Statesboro, Georgia to Alexander Washington Sr. and Estella Nunnally Washington. She was one of eight blessed children. Katherine Plummer, Alex Washington Jr., Roy Washington, Sr., James Daniel, "JD" or "Jay" Washington, Mary Washington, and Marie Washington, all preceded her in death.
Lil, as most called her, grew up with affectionate parents, supportive siblings, and a strong faith in God. She became a member of St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church at a young age and spent her early years as a resident of Bulloch County until her graduation from William James High School in 1959.
Shortly after graduation, Leo relocated to Miami Florida to live with her sister until marrying Barnett Belcher, who has since passed away. She started her career as a Cosma in Miami, enjoying styling here for various ethnicities. She worked as a secretary for Parkway Place Regional Hospital, telemetry unit for around 30 years before retiring in 2005 to help care for her sister Mary. Fellowship at Westview Baptist Church, where she was an usher and sang in the choir. She loved gospel music and church.
Lil enjoyed being fashionable and liked to shop for clothes, shoes, watches, and perfumes. White Diamond, Calvin Klein, and YSL were her favorites! Her hobbies were fishing, collecting pens, and planting flowers. Unbeknown to many, her middle name was Magnolia, she adored the flower and loved its scent. It was one of the things she appreciated when she visited her parents' home while cracking handfuls of pecans.
Lil loved to travel with her sister, Mary, and her friends, Bonnie and Dianne...especially when they were traveling where there were casinos. She loved the slot machines! They drove to Canada and Biloxi, Mississippi traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, went to the Hoover Dam while visiting Las Vegas, Nevada, and sailed countless cruises. During her leisure time, she relaxed and slept in her recliner and watched Family Feud hosted by her main man Steve Harvey.
On Friday, July 5, 2024, Lil took her journey to her new eternal home, leaving behind cherished memories and a loving family: son, Joseph (Leslie) Gethers of Somerset, NJ; brother Calvin (Patricia) Washington of Evans, GA; grandchildren, Yusef Gethers, Jamal Gethers, Kiaxana Hill, Zakiva Hill; five great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild; a very special niece who was raised in her home Frangelica Plummer of Augusta, GA; and her son Genesis, who he adoringly called Nana, a special friend James Sinclair of Alabama; many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Public viewing for Mrs. Livian Washington Belcher will take place on Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at St. Mary's Baptist Church. The Funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Joyce Lane, eulogist, and Evangelist Enola Gay Mosley, presiding; Rev. Timotheus Mincey, pastor.
Interment will follow in the St. Mary's Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Carlton Roberson, Goggins "Jay" Spann, Brandon Martin, Quentin Spann, Sr., MarQuan Washington, and Lakelvyn "Marcus" Neal
